Family Group Decision Making: Does the Model Work For the Families?

http://www.dauphinfriendshipcentre.com/family.php

By Gisele Marie Routhier, Executive Director, Dauphin Friendship Centre
Submitted to the Envision Journal of Child Welfare

Background Information:

The Family Group Decision Making model was utilized and a pilot project was established in Dauphin Manitoba in September of 1997. The Dauphin Friendship Centre was chosen as a community based sponsor and funded by the Manitoba Department of Family Service and Housing based on the guidelines presented in the "Families First: New Direction for Strengthening and Partnership" document. "Developing family strengths and tapping into community supports to protect children at risk is the goal of four family group decision making pilot projects in Brandon, Lynn Lake, Dauphin, and Winnipeg. Families are actively involved in problem solving, and decision making to encourage responsibility for developing healthy, safe plans for children.

In each project the local, community based agency works in partnership with the local child welfare agency. The partnerships involve community-based approaches to service delivery with families who have extended difficulty working with the usual approaches of the child welfare system." Celebrations recognizes milestone

MCFCS also offers assurance to former Métis youth in care

Nearly 100 friends, family, supporters and Métis Child and Family and Community Services staff showed up at the Marymound Centre gymnasium for a celebration recognizing 11 Métis youth in care who are turning 18 and will be starting out on a new journey, this time as adults. MCFCS Executive Director Alana Brownlee congratulated the youth who have been in care with the Métis social service agency since its inception. “We congratulate and honour you today for this important rite of passage and assure you that we will be there for you as you make the transition from young men and women into adults,” said Brownlee. The 11 youth; Tiffany, Chad, Tyson, Dwight, Travis, Mcylla, Ryan, Melissa, Matthew, Sabrina and Rosalyn, were also congratulated my MMF representatives Ron Chartrand (VP Winnipeg Region) Judy Mayer MMF chair MCFCS, and Yvonne Mercredi and Mona Buors, who are MCFCS board members. The celebration which included music by the Mark Morrisseau Band, singer Krysta Rey and youth role model and medal winning marathoner Candace Sutherland were also supported by Marymound staff including Executive Director Ian Hughes, Sisters Bridget and Lorraine was a cheerful; celebration that the youth visibly appreciated. “It means a lot to me,” said one of the youth. “To know that we are honoured by our own agency and our own people who care for us and understand our traditions and what it’s like to be a Métis. For MCFCS Elder Brian Normand the day was uniquely satisfying. “I’ve worked with these young people and seen them grow and develop into young adults and learn their culture and traditions as part of the care programs the MCFCS provides. “It definitely helps them grow and heal and move forward.” The location of the ceremony is also special for Normand who served as an Elder and counselor at the institution for years before accepting his current position with MCFCS. “This is the strength of the MCFCS and Marymound that we work in partnership towards bettering the lives of young people so they can become healthy and healed adults. “Marymound has been so gracious and giving and donated the use of their facilities for our celebration and that says a lot about our mutual respect as organizations sand as people.”
